Avalon’s VHP robot attains HKIE Innovation Award 2021

Hong Kong, 9 July 2021 – Avalon SteriTech Limited (“Avalon”) announces its Vapourised Hydrogen Peroxide Robot (“VHP Robot”), a disinfection robotics solution co-developed with the MTR Corporation (“MTR”), was awarded the Certificate of Merit at HKIE Innovation Award 2021. The award recognizes Avalon’s partnership with MTR on developing healthcare innovations and pioneering disinfection solutions in public space and transportation system.

In realising the shared vision between Avalon and MTR, the co-developed VHP Robot focuses on providing enhanced disinfection protocols to ensure high level of health and hygiene in trains compartments amid the COVID-19 outbreak. In order to safeguard over five million passengers every day, a total of 20 VHP Robots have been deployed to disinfect train compartments, stations and related facilities since March 2020. The VHP Robot performs deep cleaning by spraying atomised hydrogen peroxide solution to a specific concentration and disinfects small gaps and crevices that are difficult to reach during normal cleaning work.

Leveraging both parties’ expertise in biomedical science, engineering and robotics, the VHP Robot was deployed within months as an immediate response to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this collaboration, MTR strengthens and goes beyond their existing cleaning and disinfection protocols to enhance environmental safety and protect their employees and customers, setting a leading industry standard for global train operators.

“I am delighted that our first project with MTR received such prestigious recognition. The COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted all aspects of our daily lives. As part of the business community, it has also reminded us of the importance to protect our employees and customers in challenging times. Thanks to our partner MTR, our collaboration demonstrates two organizations’ commitment to realising healthcare innovation through empowering cross-disciplinary teamwork. The VHP Robots do not only protect millions of Hong Kong citizens’ journeys on trains, but also help to restore people’s confidence for safe travelling, working and living.” said Mr. Lewis Ho, Chief Executive Officer of Avalon SteriTech.

Organized by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, The HKIE Innovation Award 2021 encourages creativity and innovation in engineering among its members since 2008. The Award recognizes pioneering ideas and applications that would benefit the engineering industry and the world.
